چکیده

Radio occultation events recorded on 28–29 July 2004 by the " BlackJack " GPS receiver aboard the GRACE-B satellite are analyzed. The high stability of the receiver clock allows for the implementation of a zero difference technique rendering clock calibrations with concurrent observations of a reference GPS satellite unnecessary. Thereby the usage of ionospheric correction procedures for the derivation of excess phase paths is eliminated. Comparisons of refractivity profiles obtained by zero differencing with results calculated with the standard single difference method yield good agreement with an average fractional refractivity deviation below 1% and an one-sigma standard deviation of 2–3% at altitudes below 35 km. Both data sets are consistent with co-located ECMWF meteorological analyses.

GPS radio occultation with CHAMP and GRACE: A first look at a new and promising satellite configuration for global atmospheric sounding

CHAMP (CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload) and GRACE (Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment) formed a satellite configuration for precise atmospheric sounding during the first activation of the GPS (Global Positioning System) radio occultation experiment aboard GRACE on 28 and 29 July 2004. 338 occultations were recorded aboard both satellites, providing globally distributed vertical profiles ...

Atmospheric Remote Sensing Data Processing Through Grid Computing Technique

The space-based GPS limb sounding, conventionally known as GPS Radio Occultation, is a remote sensing technique aiming at characterize the Earth atmosphere. The atmospheric profiling is done through the inversion of excess-phase measurements carried-out by a GPS receiver placed on-board a LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellite. The GPS signal, observed when it emerges from the Earth limb, is refracted...

GRAS – Metop’s GPS-Based Atmospheric Sounder

Introduction Occultation methods based on effects connected with the refraction of electromagnetic waves in both the optical and radiofrequency domains have been used by astronomers for numerous investigations of planetary atmospheres over the last decades. The first experiment started with the Mars flyby by Mariner-IV in 1964. Since this first attempt, radio-occultation experiments have been c...

Cosmic Gps Radio Occultation: Neural Networks for Tropospheric Profiling over the Intertropical Ocean Area

Global Positioning System (GPS) radio-occultation (RO) is provided as a global sounding technique for obtaining atmospheric profiles by integrating them in global models for numerical weather prediction and for climate change studies. The radio occultation system employs GPS receivers placed on a Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite to sound the Earth’s troposphere and ionosphere evaluating the addi...
